PHILADELPHIA (1210 WPHT)- Eighteen years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the first responders who came to the rescue are paying the price for their service.

In an interview with The Rich Zeoli Show, attorney William H. Groner explained the root of the illnesses that many of the first responders fight today.

"What happened is everything in the buildings became dust," said Groner, who represented the first responders in a 10-year legal battle. "So if you look at the furniture, the fixtures, the computers, the walls, it all became dust. It's a cataclysm never seen before by science."

Groner attributed the illnesses to the naivete of the medical experts of the day.

"As a result, the medical establishment didn't know what to expect from the illnesses, and a huge number of illnesses resulted from my clients inhaling and ingesting the dust," Groner lamented.

"They were in the most toxic environment one could imagine."

Groner called the statements made about the air surrounding Ground Zero being safe to breathe "unfortunate."

"Many public officials were stating that," Groner recalled. "There's a lot of blame to go around."

According to Groner, not all is known about the dust and the ailments it may incur.

"One of the worst aspects is there's a high latency or a different latency for cancers," said Groner. "We started seeing cancers earlier than you would ever expect, and now we're still seeing cancers coming out even 18, 19 years later."
