PHILADELPHIA (1210 WPHT)- There is a big position to fill in the Philadelphia Police Department, and that is the role of commissioner.

In an interview with The Dom Giordano Program, FOP President John McNesby offered insight into what makes a great police commissioner.

"Inside the ranks is key. Inside the police department," said McNesby. "They know the city, they know the officers, they know the department and the city has invested in these commanders."

McNesby explained that the investment goes both ways, saying the police officers have invested themselves into Philadelphia.

"If they go outside the city, what does this show these people?"

McNesby implied he was not keen on the idea of hiring an outsider for the commissioner job. However, he praised the one outsider he did like in the position.

"The only decent outsider I saw was [Charles H.] Ramsey," McNesby declared. "He did a good job. We communicated well. We had our battles behind closed doors but he was a cop. He came up through the ranks and he knew how to run a police department, and a big police department."

Looking within the force, McNesby singled out the person who would best suit the commissioner role.

"Right now, everything that...checks the boxes and moves forward is the interim commissioner, and that is Christine Coulter."

McNesby said the FOP will be holding a special event on Thursday, August 29 at 6 p.m. to support the Philadelphia officers involved in the 15th St. standoff. The event will be held at 11630 Caroline Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154-2110. The event is free and open to the public.
