On today’s show, Rich commented on the firing of Saturday Night Live cast member Shane Gillis over politically incorrect jokes he made prior to joining the show. Rich explained the problem with comedy programming on television.

“They’re all in on just doing political shows now. Comedy comes second to them. Politics first, comedy second. And you better not go on there as a rising comedian and say a joke that offends anybody who is woke. You better not do that.  Because you’re in trouble. And look, I’m not saying I like jokes that are homophobic, racist, transphobic, misogynist, sexist, whatever. I’m just saying they are jokes. And to hold those things over comedians’ heads and say, ‘You’re now losing out on a comedy job because of jokes you told to people.”

Rich also explained why he has no interest in pursuing a career in stand-up comedy in this day and age.

“This is one of those professions where I say, ‘Check it off the list.’ I would have no interest in going down that road right now…because the idea that you’ll say something that is funny but offends one person…I don’t know how big the woke cancel culture is, but I know this- it’s not millions of people. I don’t even think it’s tens of thousands of people. I think it’s a small group of very angry, very unhappy, nasty people that look for victims everywhere…You could be on their side politically. You could have the same politics as them, but if you dare even say anything that offends one of their protected classes, you’re done. They’ll come after you.”
