PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — While there is no certain way to disinfect your home against the coronavirus, there are steps you can take to make sure cleaning products and disinfectants being used can help fight against the virus.

Experts say it's not too hard to find out if those cleaning products under your sink or in your grocery store may help in your fight against coronavirus as labels will have information on which virus the product can effectively fight.

Vince Smith with The Bullen Companies — a Delaware County-based business which makes specialty cleaning products — advises consumers to make sure a disinfectant product is certified by the Environmental Protection Agency.

"If it doesn't have an EPA registration number, then it doesn't do anything," Smith said.

When in doubt about what a product can and cannot do, Smith says to call the company and ask them.

Smith adds you also want to check a product's dwell time — how long it needs to be on a surface — before it's effective.

KYW Newsradio Medical Editor Dr. Brian McDonough says a little reading can go a long way in helping you pick what's right for your home or office.

"There are certain products, and it has it on their label if in fact it can take care of human coronavirus. Remember, coronavirus has many strains," he said.

McDonough adds all cleaning products play second fiddle to good old fashion good hygiene.
